The chapter
What this experience was about.
I founded Okapi Migration Services while continuing my broader leadership career because I could see how often people faced life-changing migration decisions without clear, careful guidance. Australian migration work is highly regulated and evidence-intensive. A missed requirement, weak assumption or poorly explained risk can affect families, livelihoods and an organisation’s plans.
As Founder and Principal Registered Migration Agent, I carry responsibility for the whole practice: professional judgement, strategy, financial sustainability, client acquisition, service quality, compliance, risk and digital systems. The role combines technical precision with a very human obligation to communicate truthfully when the stakes are high.
What I did
Turning purpose into practical delivery.

Managed complex and sensitive matters. I assess eligibility, evidence, timeframes and risk; coordinate documentation; maintain deadline control; and apply professional judgement to cases where the consequences are significant.

Made complexity understandable. I translate technical requirements into plain advice, explain uncertainty and alternatives, and ensure clients understand their own responsibilities before deciding how to proceed.

Owning every professional decision
In a small regulated practice, accountability cannot be passed elsewhere. I am responsible for the quality of the advice, the integrity of the file and the systems that support it. That has made disciplined review and accurate record-keeping non-negotiable.

Balancing empathy with honest advice
Clients may arrive anxious, hopeful or under severe time pressure. My responsibility is to understand the human situation without allowing empathy to become false reassurance. Sometimes the most valuable service is a clear explanation of risk or a recommendation not to proceed.

Building a practice around clarity
Good technical work can still fail a client if it is not understood. I designed communication and digital processes that make next steps, evidence requirements, responsibilities and deadlines visible, while preserving the careful judgement each matter requires.
What mattered
The principle I carried forward.
This practice has sharpened my judgement more than almost any other part of my career. People entrust me with decisions that can shape where a family lives, whether an employer can retain capability, or how someone plans the next chapter of life. What matters to me is being worthy of that trust: staying within professional boundaries, checking the detail, speaking plainly and never confusing confidence with certainty. The work has also made me a better executive—more alert to compliance, evidence, operational risk and the importance of systems people can actually follow.
